New Group: Spanish for Beginners

Convenor: Ian Howell
Starts February 2026

Many members have told us they want to learn a new language, especially one as useful, fun, and friendly as Spanish.

Here’s why I think Spanish is perfect for U3A:

  • It’s one of the easiest languages for English speakers to learn.
  • It opens the door to travel, culture, music, food, and meeting people.
  • Learning a language is one of the best ways to keep your brain sharp.
  • It’s fun — especially the way we’re going to learn it.

We’ll be using a professional tutor who specialises in teaching Spanish to adults.
This will NOT be like school — no dreary grammar drills, no memorising lists, and no tests!
Just enjoyable, practical Spanish that you can use straight away.

On a personal level, I’ll be learning right alongside you.
My background is in engineering — something I’ve always found easy — but the only language I studied at school was French… and I failed it!
So if you’ve ever thought “I’m not a language person“, please believe me: if I can learn Spanish, you absolutely can too.
