Digital Photography Group  (End of Year Coffee.)

March 16th meeting: At Alan Freer's. 9-30am, for 10-00am start.

Theme: Pictures A Touch of Red taken on Manual setting on your Camerea. Also we will have a question and answer session to try and help in the learning process of your cameras, and photography in general.

Send photographs to Alan Freer al.freer@ihug.co.nz & Ken Rose kenrose@kinect.co.nz

Photographic advice from Shirley Barton:

My only advice for you with your camera is take
lots of photos. That is the only way you will really learn how to use it.
With digital it at least doesn't cost to take photos so the more the
better. Go out into the garden and find an object or plant or something
and take photos from the same position on all the different settings
writing down what you used each time. Put them on the computer and look
for the differences. Experiment! That helps you learn what each setting
is for and what it does. You will find landscape and portrait are the two
most useful. When you have that sussed do the same on a chosen setting and
think about framing. The 1/3 theory is the most commonly used. Also at
this time take photos from sitting or kneeling on the ground, kneeling up,
standing up and then on a set of steps and look at the difference it makes.
Taking photos from low down make people look slimmer where as taken them
from high up makes them look squat. Next job is to take photos of the same
thing early in the morning, mid day and evening. This can make a huge
difference to the lighting. The golden hour is the hour after sunrise and
the hour before sunset. Both give a beautiful light. Become well versed
with the rules of photography and then set out to break them all and you
will come up with some amazing shots. Photography is all about framing and
light and as soon as you can sort that it is all good.

Buildings and Cities Group

Visit to Auckland in March or April 2010

Itinerary
The trip is to be based on the following venues – an Historic Places Trust home, a monumental public building recently enlarged with an eye-catching interior, a distinctive educational building of Spanish and British heritage, a new educational building taking advantage of its parkland backdrop, an Edwardian maritime suburb, a new bus only road and transfer points, a modern architecturally designed office park, a large modern shopping centre with some differences, the architectural styles of distinctive commercial, educational and public buildings in the CBD, and the Viaduct basin/Princess/Queens Wharf area.

Because it will not be possible to visit more than about 75% of the venues in the 2 days plus a few hours available, participants will have the opportunity to state their preferences for venues in advance, so we visit the more popular choices.

Accommodation
By special arrangement, we will be staying 2 nights in a very comfortable, centrally located hotel for $65 a night room share, or if you have relatives or friends in a handy suburb, you would be able to stay with them.

Transport
We will share cars to and from Auckland. With one exception, all the venues are designed to be seen either on foot from the hotel or by bus and perhaps a short train trip, using our gold cards.

Venue explanations
The venues will be explained in some instances by informed guides, but mostly by members of the Group putting to good effect the knowledge they have gained from preparing talks.

Phone Peter Simmons on 576 0952 if you are interested.

Tauranga U3A Creative Writers Have between 7 and 10 regular members who share a love of the written word.  They meet twice a month, 2nd and fourth Monday mornings from 9.45, usually at the same home in Ocean Beach Road, Mt. Maunganui.  After a cuppa and chat the group reads aloud any set homework.

Writing exercises include anything from spelling tests, spending 15 minutes writing in another style (like Shakespeare or Charles Dickens or Sam Hunt!), or creating a monosyllabic short story (a story with words of one syllable), and other brain food tests.     When time permits they read their own work which may be commented on, and edited individually or collectively.

U3A Wordsmiths Group

Our group of imaginative writers meet in various homes on the first and third Mondays of each month from 9.45 to 12 noon. Our activities include anything to do with writing and words. We enjoy spelling and dictionary quizzes, reading and critiquing each others work, discussing and learning from the master wordsmiths, the most famous being William Shakespeare.

Each of us has different styles and reasons for writing. Some have had work published, some are honing their skills toward children's writing, and others are planning to write their memoirs, or are meeting simply for the pleasure of writing and enjoying each others company. Yes, personalities are revealed, some closed cupboards are open and yes, we have a good laugh at the more comical stories. There are some ladies, no names here, who are a little risqué and one or two have shocked us with blood and guts and horror.

Their main objective is to encourage writing talents, enjoy social time together and to hone writing skills.

Some members of the Wordsmiths Group. Seated from left are Eleanor Doile, Sylvia Adams, Doreen Salter, Angela Dold, Jillian Brown, Nancy Betts and Rae Dawson. Photo by Janet Ormsby. This group promote the interest of the individual to write in their own genre – children’s stories, autobiography, plays, poetry, fantasy, whatever takes their imagination at the time. For 2010, group convenor Angela, has planned to take the group out-and-about to observe places or people then to write on what has been seen, felt, or imagined. Or Angela may have an in-house program to practise good writing or to learn points of grammar. This is a fun group who could squeeze in another member or two. The Wordsmiths meet on the 1st and 3rd Mondays at 9.30 for a cupper. Ph Angela 571-6767.

Currently there is a vacancy as two members are on leave. If you are interested contact Groups Coordinator Thelma Cane 574-6222, or Doreen Anderson, 576-3058.

This year the convenor is:  Angela Dold, Ph 571 6767.
